About the brand
The Deuter company is the oldest backpack brand in existence. It was founded by Hans Deuter in 1898 in the German city of Augsburg-Oberhausen and at the turn of the century, it supplied the Bavarian Post with bags and mail sacks. From 1905, they also focused on renting large tents. Further development in 1910 brought the production of the first backpacks, tents, and an expansion of bags and other accessories, primarily for military equipment. After the First World War, the company continued to grow; in addition to expanding production to leather backpacks and bags, it also began to produce suitcases and tarps, and continued to focus on manufacturing tents, which it rented out for events like Oktoberfest. The first mountaineering expedition with Deuter backpacks and equipment headed to the Pamir Mountains in 1928. Deuter supplied German mountaineers with its equipment until the 1970s, before the market expanded with other brands. The first real hit was the Tauern backpack, developed in 1934, which dominated mountaineering expeditions for thirty years. It was even used by Hermann Buhl during his first ascent of Nanga Parbat (8,125 m) in 1953.
In 1939, the Deuter factories were subordinated to the totalitarian German regime and used for the arms industry. After the war, the company tried to quickly get back on its feet and expand through innovation. The start of nylon backpack production in 1968 was a breakthrough, and Deuter soon became the number one backpack brand on the German market. A significant change also came in 1985, when Deuter patented the revolutionary Deuter Aircomfort back system, which, with some modifications, is still produced today. In 1988, Deuter added experienced mountaineers and mountain guides to its team, who have since been involved in the development of new functional backpacks. This trend continues in collaboration with the German Association of Mountain and Ski Guides, which the company established in 1997.
The company achieved considerable success with its cycling backpacks. In 1990, a collection of bike backpacks with the Airstripes back system was introduced. 15 years later, the company developed the SHIELD System – an integrated spine protector that offers greater safety for adrenaline enthusiasts. The Attack backpacks, thanks to the Shield system, won a gold medal for innovation at Eurobike. In 2006, Deuter introduced another improvement, the SL-WOMEN'S FIT system. Deuter backpacks with the SL abbreviation are specially shaped for women.
