About the brand
The British company Rab, which produces functional sportswear and equipment for climbers and mountaineers, was founded in 1981 by Scottish climber Rab Carrington after he sewed his first down sleeping bag in the attic of his terraced house in Sheffield. The minimalist design, quality handwork, and precise technical craftsmanship were the result of the experience Rab gained on his mountain expeditions in the Alps, Andes, and Himalayas, as well as in the sleeping bag workshop of his friend Hector Vieytes in Argentina, where he worked at a time when his expedition to Patagonia was thwarted by a dockworkers' strike in Liverpool. The increased demand for quality gear at that time gave Rab the idea to start producing sleeping bags and sports jackets to order. Initially just for his friends and local climbers, and later for customers from the wider area. Thus, the attic of the Carrington's house became a small factory, which was later moved to a separate production hall.
Even after 40 years of producing quality equipment, Rab does not give up its tradition or the highest standards. It constantly projects its ingenuity and pioneering enthusiasm into innovations – e.g., lightweight top materials (Pertex®, Polartec®), which it skillfully combines with a sophisticated design without unnecessary frills. Currently, the company produces not only durable functional clothing and accessories, but also sleeping bags, tents, and bivouacs, on whose quality, protection, and comfort you can confidently rely on mountain expeditions and when climbing on rock faces, even in the most extreme conditions.
Rab products "by climbers for climbers" are time-tested helpers for adventurers all over the world who are not afraid to face the elements, not only on the peaks of the Himalayas. The equipment is tested by active athletes and British mountain guides AMI. In 2022, Rab launched its own collection of extra light, durable, and technically excellently crafted backpacks, whose function and design are based on more than 50 years of experience from an expert in the field of backpack manufacturing – Lowe Alpine.
The source of inspiration for the creation of Rab products is wild mountain nature, lifelong friendships that are formed during climbing, and also a commitment to expanding the global community of climbers and preparing them well for their adventures. Equally unwavering is the company's effort to change established procedures related to production, transport, and use of products in a way that leads to the maximum possible sustainability.
Rab thinks about the future of the planet. As part of the fight against climate change, it intensively strives to minimize the impact of its production on the environment. Year after year, the company reduces the amount of waste in production, uses a larger amount of recycled fabrics, and significantly reduces its dependence on fluorocarbons, which it replaces with environmentally friendly impregnation. In addition, it repairs its products and reuses worn-out equipment. Rab cooperates with the non-profit organization Fair Wear, supports a number of projects to improve the conditions of residents and nature in many locations, and as a holder of the _Climate Neutral_ certification, it strives to achieve carbon neutrality.
