As true outdoor enthusiasts, we love nature and animals. That is why we decided that, in addition to recycling materials, waste sorting, and offering eco-friendly products, we could try to direct our efforts to help nature in a slightly different way. And so, we adopted an endangered red panda, which has been one of the new residents of Brno Zoo since October 2013.
Not all pandas are the same
If you think of the well-known giant panda when you hear the word panda, you might be quite surprised at how different these two species are. In essence, they are not similar at all. What connects them is basically just a similar way of life. While the giant panda belongs to the large bear family, the red panda (Ailurus fulgens) is a somewhat smaller carnivore whose body, up to 60 cm long, is covered in reddish-brown fur. Distinctive features of the red panda include a bushy tail that also grows up to 50 cm long, semi-retractable claws, and a so-called "sixth finger," which is an extension of the wrist bone. This allows the pandas to better grasp branches and have a stronger grip. The weight of individuals can vary, but it usually ranges from 3 to 4.5 kg.

The red panda lives in the Himalayan mountain forests of South Asia (China and adjacent surrounding countries) at an altitude of up to 5,000 meters. It is an omnivore and climbs very well, as the main component of its diet consists of juicy bamboo leaves and shoots. When visiting the zoo, you will mainly spot it in the treetops.
Although a red panda can reach a respectable age of 14 years, its population in the wild has been rapidly declining in recent years, primarily due to human recklessness. In the habitats of these creatures, there is intensive deforestation of vast forest areas. The panda not only loses its natural environment but, due to its specific diet, cannot adapt to the cultural landscape. It is also often hunted for its fur, even though it is prohibited.
Why the red panda?
The red panda is a very cute animal that is not very well known in our region. However, immediately after getting to know this little creature, you will find that it has a unique ability – with its ingenuity and activity, it can perfectly entertain its surroundings.
Pandora and Huan traveled to Brno from Norway and Austria. To make them feel comfortable in their new environment, it was necessary to completely rebuild their enclosure to fully meet their needs. Thanks to many contributions, it was finally successful, and we are very happy about it. And because the red panda has grown on us, we bought a plush toy that has become our mascot, and it is absolutely awesome! So, if you are traveling to Brno Zoo, definitely go and see the happy couple.
