Traveling Together – The Ultimate Test of Your Relationship

June 21, 2018 5 min read
You know the feeling – you fall in love and suddenly you want to spend every free moment together. You can't wait for your first vacation together, yet you feel a bit of panic at the same time. Traveling as a couple is the perfect test of your relationship.

Better to have a honeymoon before the wedding

You definitely shouldn't miss the chance to spend several days together continuously, with no possibility of escape, while getting to know each other. It will reveal a lot about your relationship. Everything starts even before the trip itself, and the experiences there can influence you long after it ends.

What can you learn about yourself, your partner, and your relationship while planning and experiencing trips together?

Money comes first

We start with a topic that isn't very romantic, but let's be honest – the issue of finances should not be overlooked in a relationship. It's not so much about spying on how fat your partner's bank account is, but rather about verifying basic financial literacy. Is your significant other capable of saving up for a vacation? Can they estimate what they can afford? And how do they manage a set budget while traveling?

Even the choice of vacation reveals a lot – does one of you want to enjoy luxury at any cost while the other longs for a low-cost trip on their own? Have you reached a stalemate in the battle between a sworn materialist who needs a five-star hotel with all-inclusive service to relax, and a dreamer for whom the main reward is an adventure far from civilization? If your values and preferences do not align, you will likely encounter this mismatch in your daily life as well.

Time to face the truth

If you have been trying to show yourself in a better light until now, you probably won't be able to keep the mask on while traveling. True character can be revealed as early as when choosing the vacation. Can you find a compromise so that you are both happy? Or will one stubbornly insist on lounging on the beach while the other persistently demands adventurous expeditions into the wilderness? To what point does such a conflict escalate? How and with what does your partner argue? These are all questions worth reflecting on.

Further tests will come soon. How will your partner react in stressful situations (or those requiring a degree of improvisation)? How do they behave while eating and during social events? Will they be openly checking out other bodies on the beach, or will they have eyes only for you?

Bodily functions get the green light

Crammed into a tiny room, with unusual food and a different daily routine, you will likely not avoid situations where you have to perform certain physical needs in the presence of your significant other that are usually veiled in shame. Believe that digestive problems and other "embarrassments" that simply cannot be avoided will test the relationship quite reliably.

In such a case, the best approach is not to take yourself too seriously. You can either tactfully ignore the undignified situations or simply laugh about them together. If you can do that, the bond between you will undoubtedly strengthen.

Build solid foundations

Perhaps the greatest added value of traveling as a couple is the shared experiences, which are the building blocks of every relationship. Thanks to them, you will have something to remember and talk about. Whether it's exciting adventures or minor mishaps that need to be solved on the fly, they will likely stick in your memory more than one of many walks in the park or an "ordinary" date at the cinema.

Tip: We also touched on the topic of partnership on the road in an interview with the traveling couple Pavla and Pavel Wilhelmovi.

Expert opinion

We also asked relationship coach and lecturer Mgr. Lucie Mucalova for her input:

A vacation together reveals many things in their true light, and I highly recommend it. It is definitely better to lose 10 days than 10 years of your life! Of course, you can also be reassured that the person next to you is truly the right partner for life. Either way, you get a bonus.

What awaits you on vacation?
  1. Goodbye pretense!
  2. Unexpected events – can we handle them together?
  3. There is no escape, 24 hours just for you – how do you use them, how do you feel together?
  4. Communication and the ability to find compromises. Is it possible? Or is your partner pushing you, forcing you, and making you feel angry?

A vacation together is simply a very valuable experience. It is a way to find out in a short time whether the person next to me is worth my trust, attention, and energy, whether they are "the one" for a life that isn't always perfect.

Usually, a perfect, fragrant, and calm person arrives at a date. When they are not in the mood, they prefer to cancel the meeting, but that's not possible on vacation. There, you have the opportunity to face the truth.

A vacation together can also be a kind of break from the comfort zone, where it's no longer just about you alone. If a man only encounters a precisely made-up, smiling picture in everyday life, he will also get to know naturalness on vacation.

Two weeks together obviously won't reveal everything, but they are an interesting and valuable excursion into a long-term relationship. Do I want to live with this person long-term? Or do we absolutely not agree, and what is nice in everyday life is hell on vacation? Do we have anything to talk about? Can we handle difficulties together? There is nowhere to hide, and the truth comes to the surface. It will tell you a lot, provided you want to see and hear it.

On vacation, the rose-colored glasses can either dissolve or strengthen.

However, remember that you are both "just" people who learn from mistakes. And who also pay for mistakes. So expect that a vacation together will help reveal imperfection in full force. And you then have the opportunity to decide what and how to proceed.

Anyway, let's not be afraid to travel together; it can be valuable training and tuning into a long-term and meaningful relationship. It is an amazing space for personal growth on all possible fronts.
