I chose the Deuter Futura 28 backpack for several reasons. First and foremost, I wanted a smaller backpack with a volume of 25 to 30 liters, which would be just right for day trips into nature while also being suitable as an urban backpack for occasional use.
For this reason, I ruled out backpacks with a top lid. At the same time, I have very good experience with the Deuter brand, which has proven itself both in quality and especially in its back system. And because I already have one Deuter Futura backpack at home and am very satisfied with it, I decided to try its smaller version. That is how the choice fell on the Deuter Futura 28.

Great back system

The Deuter Futura 28 backpack has an excellent Aircomfort Flexlite back system, which prevents back sweating even during more demanding hikes. The sturdy frame construction ensures the backpack maintains its shape and provides sufficient space between the back and the pack. On the other hand, the shape of the back system reduces the space in the main compartment, especially when carrying larger items (laptop, larger amounts of paper). The shoulder straps are padded and well-shaped, as is the hip belt. An adjustable chest strap is a matter of course. The backpack sits perfectly on the back.
Efficiently organized pockets
The backpack is divided into two compartments (upper and lower) separated by a zipper, so they can be connected if necessary. It also includes a pocket for a water reservoir. In the front part of the backpack, there is a smaller pocket with a mesh, just big enough for things you need to have with you at all times (wallet, keys, flashlight, map, sunscreen, etc.). However, there is unused space on its outer side suitable for, for example, various loops. Two elastic side pockets with compression straps are prepared for a water bottle, which can comfortably fit even a 1.5L bottle. In the case of a larger bottle, you can also use the upper compression straps to secure it.

Technical details
Essential accessories include a detachable rain cover conveniently stored in the bottom of the backpack and loops for attaching trekking poles. In contrast, there are no straps for attaching a sleeping mat. The zippers, especially on the main compartment, are a bit stiff at first, so it is necessary to open and close them with caution. However, after a few weeks, they "broke in" nicely. Overall, the backpack is made of a durable yet lightweight material.
Overall impression
The Futura 28 backpack belongs to the category of hiking backpacks where it definitely holds its own. Its strongest point is the excellent back system and overall fit on the back. It proved less effective as an urban backpack. Overall, however, I rate the backpack as excellent – it is an unbeatable companion for day hikes and nature walks, and if you don't need to carry a laptop in it very often, you can manage that too.
